Psalm 121:1-2 | Where Your Real Help Comes From
“I will lift up my eyes to the hills. My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.” Psalm 121:1-2
We live in a world that tells us to look inward for answers. Lean on yourself. Trust your own strength. Find the solution within. But the writer of Psalm 121 knew something deeper: sometimes the most courageous thing we can do is look up.
In just two verses, we're invited into a quiet but profound shift in perspective. Not a desperate grasping, but a deliberate turning toward the One who actually holds everything together.
Reflection
The psalm begins with a decision: "I will lift up my eyes to the hills." There's intention here. The psalmist isn't passively waiting for help to find them—they're actively choosing where to direct their attention. In moments of weariness or worry, we face the same choice. We can keep our gaze fixed on our problems, our limitations, our fears. Or we can lift our eyes higher.
And then comes the beautiful clarity: "My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth." There's no ambiguity. Not from circumstances, not from people alone, not from our own effort—though all of these may play a role. True, lasting help originates with the One who created it all. The God who spoke the heavens into existence is the same God who sees you in this moment.
This isn't about denying real struggles or pretending problems vanish when we pray. It's about recalibrating our foundation. When you remember that your help comes from the Maker of everything, your problems don't grow smaller because God suddenly became more powerful—they shrink into proper perspective because you're now looking at them through the lens of His greatness.
Lord, help me lift my eyes today. When I feel overwhelmed or caught in worry, remind me that my help comes from You—the One who made all things. I trust You, not because my circumstances are easy, but because You are trustworthy. Thank You for seeing me. Amen.
Today, identify one worry or burden weighing on you. Set a small reminder—perhaps a note on your phone or a specific time—to pause and physically look up. In that moment, pray the words of Psalm 121:1-2. Let the simple act of lifting your eyes be a prayer in itself.
