Walk in Love: Ephesians 5:2 Daily Devotional Guide

“Walk in love, even as Christ also loved us and gave himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling fragrance.” Ephesians 5:2

Have you ever felt the weight of trying to be kind when someone frustrated you? Or struggled to extend grace when you felt hurt? Today's verse offers something deeper than willpower—it offers a model rooted in the greatest love ever shown.

Ephesians 5:2 invites us to walk in love the way Christ walked in love. Not as a duty we check off, but as a fragrant offering that rises from a heart transformed by understanding His sacrifice for us.

Reflection

When Paul says "walk in love," he's not talking about a feeling that comes and goes. He's describing a way of life—the steady, deliberate choices we make each day. Notice the foundation: "even as Christ also loved us." Our love isn't supposed to be original or self-generated. It's meant to mirror His love, which was willing, sacrificial, and complete.

Christ didn't love us because we deserved it or because it felt easy. He loved us by giving Himself—fully, without reservation. That's the kind of love we're called to reflect. When you give your time to someone who drains you, when you forgive someone who hurt you, when you listen without judgment—that's you walking in love. That's you becoming a reflection of His sacrifice.

The verse ends with a beautiful image: a sweet-smelling fragrance rising to God. Our acts of love don't go unnoticed. They matter to God. When we choose love in difficult moments, when we serve without expecting thanks, when we extend grace instead of judgment—that pleases God. It's a fragrance that honors Him and reveals His character to a watching world.

A prayer

Jesus, thank You for loving me first, for giving Yourself when I didn't deserve it. Help me today to walk in that same kind of love—not because it's easy, but because I've been transformed by Your sacrifice. When I'm tempted to respond with frustration or selfishness, remind me of Your example. Let my life be a fragrance that honors You and points others toward Your grace.

Live it today

Today, identify one person or situation where loving is hard—maybe a difficult relationship, a moment of conflict, or a chance to serve when you're tired. Choose one small act of love in that situation: a kind word, genuine listening, or a helpful action. Do it as an offering, remembering that Christ did far more for you.
