Walk After the Lord: Deuteronomy 13:4 on True Fear
“You shall walk after the LORD your God, fear him, keep his commandments, and obey his voice. You shall serve him, and cling to him.” Deuteronomy 13:4
When you hear the word "fear," you might picture something scary or unsettling. But the Bible uses "fear" in a different way—not as dread, but as reverent awe and deep respect. It's the kind of fear that draws us closer to God rather than pushing us away.
Deuteronomy 13:4 paints a beautiful picture of what this looks like: walking after the Lord, honoring Him, keeping His commands, listening to His voice, serving Him, and clinging to Him. These aren't separate actions—they're all pieces of one devoted life.
Reflection
"You shall walk after the LORD your God"—this opening phrase means following in His footsteps, moving in the direction He leads. It's not a one-time decision but a daily choice to align our path with His. When we fear God in this reverent way, we naturally want to go where He goes and do what He asks.
Notice that fear, here, produces closeness, not distance. When we truly honor God—when we understand His goodness and power—we don't run from Him; we run toward Him. We keep His commandments not out of fear of punishment, but out of love and respect. We obey His voice because we recognize that His guidance is trustworthy and true.
The verse ends with "cling to him." That word carries such warmth and intimacy. To cling means to hold tight, to stay near, to refuse to let go. This is the fruit of fearing the Lord—a heart that won't settle for anything less than His presence. When we serve Him and cling to Him, we find that the very thing we feared—losing our freedom or our way—actually finds its cure in devotion to Him.
Lord, help me understand fear the way You define it—not as terror, but as reverent awe that draws me near to You. Quiet my anxious heart and help me trust that Your commands are good. Give me the courage to walk after You, to listen for Your voice, and to cling to You through every season of my life. Amen.
Today, pick one command of God you've been avoiding or struggling to obey. Instead of viewing it as a restriction, ask yourself: "How might this show me that God loves me and wants my good?" Then take one small step toward obeying it, not from fear of punishment, but from a desire to draw closer to Him.
