Trust in God's Name Over Everything - Psalm 20:7
“Some trust in chariots, and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.” Psalm 20:7
We live in a world that tells us to trust in visible things. Build your savings. Strengthen your body. Secure your position. There's nothing wrong with being responsible, but somewhere along the way, we can drift into believing that our safety depends on these things rather than on God.
The psalmist understood something we desperately need to remember: true security comes from a completely different source.
Reflection
In ancient times, a nation's strength lay in its military might—the thunder of chariots, the power of horses. These were the visible symbols of protection and victory. Yet the psalmist deliberately turns away from that confidence. He's not saying chariots and horses are evil; he's saying they are insufficient. They cannot ultimately save us.
When we trust in the name of the Lord our God, we're trusting in who He is: His character, His power, His faithfulness, His love. His name carries the weight of every promise He's ever kept, every deliverance He's ever provided, every time He's shown up for His people. This isn't wishful thinking—it's built on centuries of evidence that God is exactly who He says He is.
The beautiful promise here is not that life will be easy or that we won't face hard things. It's that we're never facing them alone, and we're never facing them without a God who is more powerful than any circumstance. When we place our trust there—not in our strength, our resources, or our plans, but in God Himself—we find a peace that doesn't depend on our circumstances changing.
Lord, I confess that I often trust in what I can see and control before I turn to you. Help me reorder my confidence today. When I'm tempted to believe that my security depends on my own efforts, remind me of your faithfulness. I want to trust in your name—in who you are and all that you can do. Thank you for being trustworthy. Amen.
Today, notice one area where you're carrying anxiety about something you can't fully control. Instead of trying harder to manage it, spend two minutes speaking your trust out loud: 'I trust in the name of the Lord my God with this situation.' Let that simple declaration reset your heart.
