He Is My Refuge and Fortress - Psalm 91:2 Trust

“I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust."” Psalm 91:2

Sometimes the weight of worry settles on our shoulders without warning. A difficult conversation, an uncertain future, a health concern—suddenly the world feels less safe. In those moments, the psalmist offers us something precious: a declaration of trust that can anchor our hearts.

Psalm 91:2 isn't a magical formula or a promise that trouble won't come. It's something deeper—an invitation to name where our real safety lies, and to practice trusting God with the parts of our lives we cannot control.

Reflection

A refuge is a place you run to when you're threatened. A fortress is a structure built strong enough to withstand attack. When the psalmist says "He is my refuge and my fortress," they're describing God using the language of safety—the kind of safety our hearts desperately crave. But notice the verb: "I will say." This is a choice. Trust isn't passive; it's something we declare, again and again, until our worried minds begin to believe what our hearts know to be true.

What makes this declaration powerful is its simplicity. The psalmist doesn't say, "He will be my refuge if I'm good enough," or "if my circumstances change," or "if I can figure everything out." It's unconditional. God's character as our refuge isn't dependent on our performance or our understanding. He simply is. That's the foundation of trust—not in our ability to fix things, but in His nature to hold us.

When we say "my God, in whom I trust," we're making a personal claim. This isn't someone else's God or someone else's trust. It's ours. And that matters. Genuine trust is born in our own hearts, through our own experience of God's faithfulness, one day at a time. It grows when we choose to remember who He is, even when fear whispers that He's distant or unconcerned.

A prayer

Lord, today I choose to declare what I know to be true: You are my refuge, my safe place. When anxiety rises, help me remember that my trust isn't in circumstances changing, but in You holding me through them. Quiet my mind and settle my heart in the truth of Your faithfulness. Thank You for being the fortress I can rely on. Amen.

Live it today

This morning, take a moment to pause and say aloud: "The Lord is my refuge and fortress; in Him I trust." Write this verse on a sticky note and place it somewhere you'll see it today—your mirror, your car, your desk. Each time you see it, let it be a small invitation to remember where your true safety lies.
