Love and Obedience: Jesus Makes His Home in John 14:23

“Jesus answered him, "If a man loves me, he will keep my word. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.” John 14:23

Have you ever felt truly at home? Not just in a building, but that deep sense of belonging and safety where you can simply be yourself? Jesus offers something even more profound. When He speaks of making His home in us, He's describing an intimacy that goes beyond our understanding.

Today's verse reveals the beautiful progression of love: we love Jesus, we keep His word, and in response, God the Father loves us and Jesus Himself comes to dwell within us. It's an exchange of presence that transforms everything.

Reflection

Notice the simplicity and power in Jesus's words. Love isn't a feeling we merely express—it's demonstrated through our choices. When we love Jesus, we keep His word. This isn't about earning His love or proving ourselves worthy. Rather, it's the natural response of a heart that recognizes His goodness. A child who loves a parent wants to please them; a follower who loves Jesus wants to obey Him.

What makes this promise so staggering is what follows: the Father doesn't just notice our obedience from a distance. Both the Father and Jesus come and make their home in us. This is residency, not a visit. God isn't content to observe your life from heaven—He wants to dwell within you, to be present in your daily choices, your quiet moments, your struggles and joys.

This indwelling presence isn't reserved for spiritual giants or those who have it all figured out. It's available to anyone who loves Jesus enough to follow Him. Your home becomes God's home. Your heart becomes His dwelling place. The King of Kings wants to live with you—not above you, around you, or near you, but within you.

A prayer

Jesus, help me understand what it truly means to love You. Give me the desire and strength to keep Your word, not out of fear or obligation, but because I want to be close to You. Make Your home in my heart today. Help me feel the reality of Your presence, and let that awareness shape everything I do. Thank You for promising never to leave me. Amen.

Live it today

Today, identify one area where you know Jesus's teaching applies to your life—whether it's about kindness, honesty, forgiveness, or patience. Choose to follow His word in that one area as a concrete expression of your love for Him. As you do, pause and remember: God sees your choice, and He draws nearer.
