Love God With All Your Strength | Mark 12:30
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.' This is the first commandment.” Mark 12:30
When Jesus spoke about the first commandment, He didn't describe a quiet, passive love. He called us to love with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. That word—strength—matters. It's an invitation to bring our whole selves, our energy, our determination, into our relationship with God.
Many of us think loving God means feeling a certain way or believing the right things. But strength suggests something more active, more engaged. It's about showing up for God with our full effort, not just our best intentions.
Reflection
What does it mean to love God with all your strength? It means our faith isn't something we compartmentalize into Sunday mornings or quiet prayers. It's woven into how we work, how we serve others, how we choose what to do with our time and energy. When we love God with our strength, we're saying: "I'm all in. My effort, my resources, my commitment—they're yours."
Strength in the Bible isn't always loud or visible. Sometimes it's the strength to keep showing up when you're tired. It's the strength to choose kindness when you're frustrated. It's the strength to trust God when circumstances look impossible. This kind of strength comes not from our own willpower, but from knowing we're loved unconditionally by the God we serve.
Notice Jesus made this the first commandment. Before anything else—before rules, before achievements, before proving ourselves—comes love. And that love requires our whole self: our feelings (heart), our core being (soul), our thinking (mind), and our doing (strength). When all four work together in devotion to God, we become whole.
Lord, I want to love you with everything I am. Help me bring my whole self to you—not just the parts that feel easy or safe. Give me strength to follow through, courage to trust you with my effort, and a heart that stays devoted even when I'm weary. Thank you for loving me completely first.
Today, identify one area where you're holding back from God—whether it's your time, your honesty, or your effort—and take one small step to give it fully to Him. It might be serving someone without checking the clock, or speaking truth even though it's uncomfortable, or simply working as if you're working for God.
