The LORD is My Portion - Hope in Lamentations 3:24

“"The LORD is my portion," says my soul. "Therefore I will hope in him."” Lamentations 3:24

Life has a way of stripping away our securities. Jobs change, relationships shift, health falters. In those hollow moments, we search for something solid to hold onto—something that won't slip through our fingers.

That's exactly where the writer of Lamentations found himself. Surrounded by loss and devastation, his soul made a choice that changed everything: "The LORD is my portion. Therefore I will hope in him."

Reflection

The word "portion" carries weight here. In ancient times, a portion was your inheritance, your rightful share, your means of survival. When someone claimed something as their portion, they were saying, "This is mine. This sustains me." The writer didn't say God would give him back his wealth, restore his city, or reverse his circumstances. He said God Himself was enough. God was the inheritance worth having.

Notice the order: first comes the declaration, then comes the hope. His hope didn't create his faith—his faith created his hope. Once his soul acknowledged that the Lord was his true portion, hope became possible. Why? Because hope is only as strong as what it rests upon. Hope built on circumstances crumbles when circumstances shift. Hope built on the Lord stands firm.

This isn't blind optimism or denial of pain. Lamentations doesn't skip over the suffering. But it does acknowledge that suffering doesn't get the final word. The God who sees you, who sustains you, who remains faithful—He is your lasting portion. Everything else is temporary. Everything else can be lost. But Him? Never.

A prayer

Lord, my soul often clings to things that slip away—security, comfort, control. Today I want to declare what the psalmist declared: You are my portion. You are enough. When uncertainty rises around me, help me remember that I already have what matters most—You. Give me a hope that doesn't depend on circumstances but on Your faithfulness. Amen.

Live it today

Today, identify one thing you're anxiously holding onto—a need, a worry, a desire for control. Write these words where you'll see them: "The LORD is my portion." Let that simple declaration redirect your trust from that thing to Him. Return to it whenever anxiety returns.
