Hearing God's Kindness: A Morning of Trust - Psalm 143:8

“Cause me to hear your loving kindness in the morning, for I trust in you. Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, for I lift up my soul to you.” Psalm 143:8

There's something sacred about the first moments of morning—before the world demands your attention, before your to-do list takes over. The psalmist knew this. He understood that morning is the perfect time to pause and listen for God's voice, not as a religious obligation, but as a thirsty person reaches for water.

Today's verse invites us into that quiet space. It's an invitation to begin each day by hearing God's loving kindness and asking Him to show us the way forward. Notice what comes first: not figuring everything out ourselves, but listening. Not striving, but trusting.

Reflection

When the psalmist asks God to "cause me to hear your loving kindness in the morning," he's not just requesting information. He's asking for an experience—to genuinely feel and know that God cares about him. This is the foundation of everything that follows. Before we can trust God with direction, we need to be reminded of His kindness toward us. Trust doesn't grow from obligation or duty. It grows when we remember, again and again, that God is good.

The second part of the verse flows naturally from the first: "Cause me to know the way in which I should walk." Once our hearts are anchored in God's kindness, asking for guidance becomes an act of faith, not anxiety. We're not desperately searching for the "right" path while afraid of getting it wrong. We're asking our loving Father to show us where to step. The difference is profound. One approach is driven by fear; the other by trust.

Notice too that the psalmist "lifts up" his soul to God. This is an active choice—a deliberate turning toward Him. It's not passive waiting; it's an offering. We lift ourselves toward Him like a child reaching up to be held. In doing so, we acknowledge that our lives belong to Him and that His wisdom is worth seeking more than our own comfort.

A prayer

Lord, as I begin this day, help me pause long enough to remember your kindness toward me. Quiet my anxious thoughts and help me truly hear that you care about me—not because I've earned it, but because you are good. Show me the way I should walk today. I lift my heart to you, trusting that you see what I cannot. Guide me, not by fear, but by your loving hand. Amen.

Live it today

Tomorrow morning, before checking your phone or your schedule, spend five minutes sitting quietly and asking God one simple question: "What do you want me to know about your kindness toward me today?" Wait and listen. Then ask Him to show you one thing—just one—that He wants you to do or understand. Write it down. This small shift from striving to listening can reshape your entire day.
