God's Love First: 1 John 4:10 on True Sacrifice

“In this is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son as the atoning sacrifice for our sins.” 1 John 4:10

We live in a world of transactions. We earn what we get. We trade value for value. But God's love doesn't work that way, and that's the most liberating truth we could ever grasp.

Today's verse cuts right to the heart of what makes God's love different from anything we experience on earth. It's not about what we do for Him. It's about what He did for us.

Reflection

Think about the backwards logic here. We might expect God to love us because we're lovable, or because we've earned His affection through good behavior. But John tells us the opposite is true. God loved us first—while we were still broken, still selfish, still finding our own ways. His love wasn't a reward. It was a gift that came looking for us.

And because His love is that real and that certain, He sent His Son. Not as a distant gesture, but as a sacrifice—taking on the weight of our sins, bridging the gap between our brokenness and His holiness. Jesus became the atoning sacrifice, the one who stands in the gap for us.

This changes everything about how we see ourselves and God. We don't have to perform for His love. We don't have to be good enough. His love is already there, already given, already complete. Our job is simply to receive it and let it transform us from the inside out.

A prayer

Father, thank You for loving me before I knew how to love You back. Thank You for sending Jesus to bridge the distance between us. Help me stop trying to earn what You've already freely given, and help me live today knowing I am deeply loved. Amen.

Live it today

Today, when you feel pressure to prove yourself—at work, at home, or in your own heart—pause and remind yourself: God already loves you completely. You don't have to earn it. Choose one moment to rest in that truth instead of striving.
