God Is Near to the Broken Heart | Psalm 34:18
“The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those crushed in spirit.” Psalm 34:18
Heartbreak feels lonely. Whether you're grieving a loss, nursing a relationship wound, or carrying disappointment that's become too heavy—those moments make the world feel cold and empty. You might wonder: Is anyone here? Does anyone see this pain?
The Psalmist knew this feeling. And in Psalm 34:18, he offers us a truth that cuts through the darkness: the Lord is near to those with a broken heart.
Reflection
Notice the word "near." Not distant. Not disappointed. Not waiting for you to get yourself together first. Near. The God who set the stars in place steps into your grief and stands close. He doesn't look away from your crushed spirit—He leans in toward it. This nearness isn't a small comfort; it's the foundation of everything that heals.
Brokenness, in Scripture, often opens a door. When we're broken, we stop pretending. We stop trying to manage life alone. And paradoxically, that's when we become most aware of God's presence. It's not that He arrives when we break—He was always there. But breaking can open our eyes to see Him.
"Saves those crushed in spirit" doesn't mean rescue from all pain. It means rescue *within* the pain—a presence that holds you, sustains you, and promises that this broken place isn't the end of your story. Salvation here is relational: God doesn't abandon you to your grief; He enters it with you.
If you're broken today, you're exactly where God's comfort is most powerfully at work. Your pain has not disqualified you from His nearness. It has opened you to it.
Lord, I feel broken right now, and I'm grateful You don't turn away. Help me sense Your nearness today, even in this darkness. Heal what's crushed in me, not all at once, but step by step. Thank You for drawing close when I hurt most. Amen.
Today, name one place in your heart that feels broken or crushed. Then, in a quiet moment, speak directly to God about it—no filters. Tell Him the truth of your pain. His nearness is waiting for your honesty.
