God Is Love: Remaining in His Perfect Love | 1 John 4:16

Have you ever noticed how easy it is to say we believe in God's love, but then live as if we don't? We pray, we go through the motions, yet deep down we're still afraid, still doubting, still striving to earn what's already been freely given. Today's verse invites us into something far more beautiful: a love so real, so solid, that once we truly know it and believe it, it becomes the center of our entire existence.

John writes with such simplicity and power: God is love. Not that God shows love sometimes, or loves when we deserve it. God's very nature is love itself. And when we really grasp this—when we stop just knowing it in our heads and actually believe it in our hearts—everything shifts.

Reflection

The first part of this verse says we "know and have believed" God's love. There's a beautiful tension here. Knowledge and belief aren't the same thing. You can know something intellectually while your heart remains unconvinced. But John is talking about a deeper knowing—one that moves from your mind into your bones, into the way you live and breathe. It's the kind of knowing that changes you.

Then comes the promise: "he who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him." This isn't about achieving perfection or earning favor. It's about staying rooted in the reality of God's love—letting it be your foundation, your home, your very air. When you remain in that love, you're simultaneously remaining in God. The two are inseparable. You're not separate from His love; you're held within it, and He dwells in you.

This changes everything about how we live. When you're convinced that God loves you completely—not because of what you do or don't do, but because of who He is—you stop performing. You stop striving. You begin to love others not from obligation or fear, but from the overflow of a heart that's been transformed by being loved. That's the gospel in a nutshell.
