God Circumcises Your Heart to Love - Deuteronomy 30:6

“The LORD your God will circumcise your heart, and the heart of your offspring, to love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live.” Deuteronomy 30:6

There's a big difference between trying to love God and actually loving God. We can force ourselves through the motions, check the boxes, and still feel like something's missing. We're trying so hard, yet our hearts feel distant or divided.

That's where this verse meets us with stunning hope. God doesn't leave us stranded in that struggle. He promises to do something profound—to circumcise our hearts, removing what keeps us from wholehearted devotion.

Reflection

When we read "circumcise your heart," we're looking at spiritual language that means removing barriers and obstacles. In the Old Testament, circumcision was a sign of covenant, of belonging to God. Here, God is saying He'll work within us—in the deepest place—to strip away whatever prevents us from loving Him completely. Our pride, our doubts, our competing loyalties, our fear—all the things that divide our attention.

Notice the promise isn't just for us. God says He'll circumcise the hearts of our offspring too. Our spiritual transformation doesn't stop with us. When we love God with all our heart and soul, that devotion shapes the spiritual inheritance we pass down. Our children see what wholehearted love looks like. They learn it's possible before they even understand why.

And here's the beautiful part: this transformation is so we may *live*. Not just exist or survive, but truly live. When our hearts are freed from division and fully turned toward God, we experience the life He designed us for—a life of peace, purpose, and genuine joy. Love becomes the engine that drives everything.

A prayer

Lord, I bring you my divided heart today. I want to love you with everything I am, but I know I can't do this alone. Work in me in ways I can't even see. Remove the barriers that keep me from wholehearted devotion. Circumcise my heart and make me fully yours. I trust you to transform not just me, but my influence on those I love. Thank you for meeting me here.

Live it today

Today, identify one thing that competes for your devotion to God—it might be worry, ambition, a relationship, or even a distraction. Name it honestly, then ask God to do His circumcising work there. This isn't about guilt; it's about inviting Him into the exact places where your heart is divided.
