Not to Us, but to Your Name: Psalm 115:1 on Love

The opening words—"Not to us, LORD, not to us"—aren't spoken in defeat. They're spoken in relief. When we stop the exhausting work of promoting ourselves, we're freed to see and celebrate the goodness around us. The psalmist points us toward a simple truth: God's loving-kindness and truth are so real, so reliable, that they speak for themselves. Our job isn't to make God look good. Our job is to recognize His goodness and let it transform how we love others.

Love rooted in God's glory is different from love rooted in what we'll get in return. When we acknowledge that every good thing flows from God's character—His loving-kindness and unwavering truth—our love becomes less transactional. We stop loving to earn points or to be remembered. We love because we've encountered a God whose nature is to love generously, and that generosity spills over into how we treat others. We become channels of something bigger than ourselves.

This perspective changes everything. Instead of asking, "Will people notice my kindness?" we ask, "How can I reflect God's loving-kindness today?" Instead of wondering if we're telling the truth at the right moment to protect our reputation, we ask, "How can I speak truth in love, the way God does?" The shift from self-promotion to God-centered living isn't restrictive—it's the most expansive way to live.
