Find Joy in Your Work | Ecclesiastes 9:7 Devotional

“Go your way—eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a merry heart; for God has already accepted your works.” Ecclesiastes 9:7

There's a freedom that comes when you stop performing for approval. You've already received it. God sees your effort, your faithfulness, your honest attempts to do right—and He accepts you completely. This isn't permission to be careless; it's an invitation to be at peace.

Today's verse reminds us that acceptance doesn't come from perfect performance. It's already given. So what does that mean for how you live right now?

Reflection

"Go your way—eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a merry heart." These aren't just poetic words about pleasure. They're guidance for how to approach your ordinary day. Your work, your responsibilities, your daily bread—these are meant to be experienced with genuine joy, not grim obligation. The Teacher is saying: savor the life you're living.

But here's what makes this possible: "for God has already accepted your works." You don't need to hustle for His approval. You don't need to prove yourself through endless striving. God isn't sitting back waiting for you to finally be good enough. He's already said yes to you. This changes everything about how you work, how you rest, how you show up.

When you truly believe you're already accepted, you can work without anxiety. You can rest without guilt. You can enjoy your meals without wondering if you deserve them. The pressure lifts. You're free to bring your whole self—your effort, your care, your creativity—not because you're earning love, but because you already have it.

This is the guidance the verse offers: stop waiting to feel worthy. You already are. Now live like it.

A prayer

God, help me release the weight of trying to earn what You've already given me. Help me work with excellence today, not from fear, but from peace. Give me the freedom to enjoy what's in front of me—my work, my food, my rest—knowing I'm accepted by You. Settle my anxious heart and let me move through this day with genuine joy. Amen.

Live it today

Today, identify one task or meal or moment you usually rush through or approach with anxiety. Pause and remind yourself: God has already accepted me. Then do that one thing with full presence and a thankful heart—not to earn approval, but to enjoy what's been given.
