Be Strong and Courageous: Joshua 1:9 Daily Devotional

“Be strong and courageous. The Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

There are moments when courage feels impossible. A new beginning looms. Uncertainty presses in. We wonder if we have what it takes to move forward. In those quiet moments of doubt, God speaks a truth that has steadied hearts for centuries: "Be strong and courageous. The Lord your God is with you wherever you go."

This wasn't just a pep talk for Joshua facing a military conquest. It's a promise for you today, in whatever challenge you're walking into.

Reflection

Notice what God doesn't say. He doesn't promise the path will be easy or that fear will vanish completely. He doesn't say you'll never face opposition or uncertainty. Instead, He addresses the deepest source of courage: your awareness of His presence. Strength and bravery are rooted not in circumstance but in relationship—knowing, truly knowing, that you're not alone.

The word "wherever" is everything. Not just in the sanctuary or in moments of clarity, but wherever you go. Into the difficult conversation. Into the new job. Into the season of loss. Into the risk you've been afraid to take. The promise travels with you, not staying behind in some safer place.

When we understand that God's presence isn't something we earn through performance or deserve through perfection, we're freed from the exhausting work of self-courage. We can be strong not because we're naturally bold, but because we're tethered to something—Someone—infinitely greater than our fear.

A prayer

Lord, I confess that fear often whispers louder than faith. Today, help me remember that You are not distant or conditional in Your presence. You are here, with me, in this moment and all the moments ahead. Calm my racing thoughts. Steady my uncertain steps. Help me walk forward with quiet courage, not because I'm brave, but because You are faithful. Amen.

Live it today

When fear rises today, pause and place your hand on your chest. Take three slow breaths and whisper, "The Lord is with me." Let this physical reminder anchor the truth: you are not facing this alone.
